Clothing was designed to reveal to social status of its wearer. The more distinguished the wearer, the more his dress was distinctively marked. The normal citizen would wear a toga, married women a stola. The senator has broad strips on his tunic and wears colored shoes, whilst flowing robes and a laurel wreath on his head identifies a emperor.
